Chemical peels for skin rejuvenation are not new. In fact, they’ve been used safely and reliably for many decades. It doesn’t mean, however, that peels from forty years ago are the same peels we’re still using today. Some of the ingredients may be similar sure, but modern formulations are more sophisticated and science-based.
Today’s Peels Are Gentle Yet Deliver Outstanding Results
Chemical peels generally fall into one of three categories: mild, medium and deep. Using highly researched acids such as Glycolic, Salicylic and the popular compound called Jessner’s, we’re able to control more precisely how deep the peel penetrates.
Other than being reliable and effective, chemicals peels are extremely popular because they can be safely performed on all skin types and ethnicities. Unlike some types of laser and IPL, peels don’t target pigment in the skin. Therefore, they don’t increase the risk of pigmentation issues or PIH (post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation).
What Type of Chemical Peel, Yorkville, Is Right for Me?
You may be a candidate for more than one type of skin peel. For this reason a detailed consultation is very important. Here are some guidelines to give you an idea of which category you may fall under:
Mild: These are the gentlest of all the skin peels and tend to have the least amount of downtime. You’ll be able to return to work or normal activities almost immediately. You can expect your skin to be a little pink and feel tight, like a sunburn. Mild peels are ideal for treating uneven skin texture and tone, enlarged pores and mild hyperpigmentation.
Medium: Designed to treat slightly more advanced skin conditions such as sun damage, skin aging and acne scarring, Medium peels penetrate deeper than their mild cousins and produce a much higher cellular turnover.. Therefore these peels require 2-5 days of downtime. You can expect more redness, tightness, peeling, and itching.
Deep: Ideal for more severe cases of hyperpigmentation (such as melasma), wrinkles, sun damage and scars. These peels may require 5-7 days of downtime and have some discomfort associated with them. Due to their deep nature, considerable peeling may occur which is normal and expected. Deep peels also produce the most dramatic results which is why they remain so popular.
How to Prepare: Before and After My Procedure
Avoid sun exposure for at least two weeks before your chemical peel treatment. If you have a severe cystic acne breakout, make sure to let your technician know as your peel may have to be postponed. Make sure you take the appropriate amount of time off based on your type of peel your skin therapist recommended.
You will be provided with detailed post=care instructions. Some of these may including how to clean and properly care for your skin after treatment, avoiding sun exposure, excessive heat and sweating.
For best results 3-5 sessions may be recommended.
